The Power Of Pop Music
Asheville's SeepeopleS Release Apocalypse Cow, Vol. 1

SeepeopleS, a talented pop quartet from Asheville, will unveil songs from its new album, Apocalypse Cow, at the Boone Saloon next Friday.

Experimental pop with an off-beat sense of humor has never been the most popular of musical genres, but then again, it has never been eradicated either. The grand masters of the genre include Todd Rundgren, Nick Lowe, and Steely Dan while newer pop stylists such as Clem Snide, Velvet and King Radio have ably picked up the baton.

Add to that list the western North Carolina band SeepeopleS. The band, led by singer-songwriter Will Bradford, has found a niche making exciting, tuneful and occasionally humorous music for the masses. SeepeopleS' latest release is the sprawling album Apocalypse Cow, a beautiful collection of original songs that touch on the themes of love, war, spirituality and personal tragedy.

SeepeopleS will present songs from Apocalypse Cow at a special concert at the Boone Saloon on Friday, May 18th. The show starts at 10: 30 p.m.

"We are originally a Boston band but these days Asheville is our base of operations," said Bradford. "I've been playing with Dan (Ingenthron) and Tim (Haney) for about ten years now. We changed the band's name to SeepeopleS in 2000 because of some changes in personnel in the band."

Bradford indicated that despite the sophisticated studio sound of Apocalypse Cow, the quartet manages to recreate all the songs from the album on stage.

"There's a ridiculous amount of production to our live show," said Bradford. "We have a tremendous amount of gear for just four musicians. We bring nine keyboards with us in our attempt to bring the studio to the stage. It's just insane."

Over the past seven years SeepeopleS has gone through three vans and Bradford estimates they have logged more than 600,000 miles on the road. Prior to the show in Boone, Seepeoples' album release tour has taken them through Colorado, Texas and New Mexico, in addition to most of the states in the Southeast.

In addition to Bradford, the band includes Tim Haney on drums, Dan Ingenthron on bass and vocals, and Peter Keys on keyboards.

"For some reason we have a really strong fanbase in Kansas," said Bradford. "We played the Wakarusa Festival in Lawrence and we'll play Dog-Stock there this summer. This weekend we go to another festival in Garrettsville, Ohio with Ekoostick Hookah."

Although far from a household name, SeepeopleS is making headway with a lot of alternative radio DJs due to their wonderfully catchy pop tunes.

"Pop music does well on the radio," said Bradford. "We still feel like we're flying under the radar but we've gotten a lot help from radio DJs and magazine writers. The title track to Apocalypse Cow seems to the be the tune that has gotten the most spins so far."

Other standout tracks on the album include the guitar driven opening cut, "Don't Panic" and the closing "Say Goodbye" with its melancholy mixture of vocals, cello and violin.

"We're a unique band in that we have a very nice studio situation," said Bradford. "We can record our music just about any time we want to. Of course, the downside to that is that we become perfectionists. We keep tinkering with tracks long after we should just move on to the next song."

Bradford stated that the reason that the official name of the album is Apocalypse Cow Vol. One is that the band initially wrote enough new material to create a double album. Their label, Razcalz Records, convinced them that it would be less expensive and easier to market if they released the music as separate discs, which is now their intention. This summer the band will conduct an extensive tour during which they will perform songs from Apocalypse Cow Vol. 1 and find out which songs from Apocalypse Cow Vol. 2 connect with their growing fanbase.
